And Then We Danced (2019) dir. Levan Akin (#ATWD amateur guidebook)
Tumblr media
Kudratcha Maro*
At first she pretends to be indifferent and the day after she pretends as if she never knew him she flirts with the eyes. Are you the month april? who does not know what he wants? Where do you want (to go)? (But) we are going together** I want to destroy you!*** (...)
_____________________
*this is not perfect but still the only available lyrics translation I got thanks to @chrisoels and her german subtitles from the movie. The only subtitles I have to this song is... this🤦:
Tumblr media
**german version says: "wir gehen doch zusammen" and "gehen zusammen" can (and probably does) mean in this context "to date"
***the part where Irakli drums on his chest. Sadly, german subtitles stop right after that, even though the lyrics can still be heard.
I think it's also worth to mention that the song was written specifically for this movie and in post production because movie makers were not given right to use the song that was originally sang (read more about it here). That's probably why I could not find the lyrics anywhere for a year.
And, well, Irakli's singing was surely meant-to-look-like-a-joke, but knowing that there are no gender indications in georgian pronouns - I guess we can kind of assume that he was actually just loudly and shamelessly flirting with Merab in broad daylight and before witnesses❤️‍🔥

Someday I’m gonna write a whole cork-board-and-red-thread rant about the foreshadowing in the ATWD soundtrack and why it hurts every damned time I listen to it, but for today I’m just gonna sit here being broken-hearted and furious as I listen to Molly Nilsson.

"I lost a little boy..."
And Then We Danced/ და ჩვენ ვიცეკვეთ (2019) dir. Levan Akin
While analysing the movie soundtrack and listening to Patara Bichi (პატარა ბიჭი) in this scene over and over again to get as much words as a can -
the realization suddenly stroke me it's not Merab who is the main character in this particular part of the movie
It's about Mariam!
This girl is visibly struggling. First of all she's not even sure what had actually happened because it's hard for her to believe that what she suspects could be truth. Like: of course she knows such things happen but... those were always other people!
All she knows is that she's losing Merab. But she doesn't know how to deal with that, what to even feel about that: if to rather be angry for the betrayal or sad for being left behind because when considering the overwhelming weirdness of the whole situation -
all in all she's just confused as hell. And it's not until Sopo's talking about Zaza that Mary's burning emotions turn from confusion and anger to seriously worrying about her dearest friend

OMG she really is there!!!🤯
Tumblr media Tumblr media
though it doesn't seem like she could have seen a lot more than Irakli leaving the room
and even less she could have heard because music was quite loud
Also I only just now noticed there's music in that scene (watching the movie countless times for the last 2 years and I could never pay my attention to anything but them two...). It's "Gandagana" and first words you can hear is "Tarnanani ninano" [x]

And Then We Danced / და ჩვენ ვიცეკვეთ (2019), dir. Levan Akin
#ATWD amateur guidebook
Soundtrack & Lyrics - Part 5 [go to: Prologue, Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4]
[Note: Most of this film music corresponds with what's happening on the screen. The less characters are speaking - the more traditional folk tunes take their turn in commenting the events. Old songs are fitting so good that the story becomes universal "tale as old as time". Lyrics translation usually comes from Google Translator and is absolutely awful but I don't speak Georgian so what else could I do]
21. ბინდისფერია სოფელი (Bindis Feria Sofeli)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The village is gradually getting darker What is our life will fly away like a bird Someday the grass will grow on our village
Even those who thought it was hard to walk were briefly looked after. The rust of the gun will eat the rust of the earth, the heart of the man will be sad. Death will come invisible, he will throw away his weapon in a second. What we will take to the world, no one else has taken what.
[The part above is what you can hear in the movie. Below is the part that is not in the movie but I suppose is well known to Georgian audience]
I will recite the poem to you and it will be good for me to die And you will remain here as a memory of me They used to tell me that they were just like me Let the country rejoice and I die in the grave Those who are right like me will listen to the voice of panduri Don't fall apart, don't get married
[Note: 1. Lyrics I found at genius.com 2. It's worth to realize that this is one of the moments in the movie with very distinctive contrast of mood between music and the movie scene: we can see a theoretically joyfull wedding scene and Merabi's face changing from numb to overhelmed with joy - yet the song in the background speaks about death and its inevitability. Is this contrast meant to only emphasize that the wedding is actually not so joyful since it's for "saving girl's honour"? Or that Merabi's feelings are closer to grief than joy? But even when his face changes, the song keeps on going - is that to suggest that love and hope is stronger than the vision of death? or rather that this love is hopeless? You decide (Anyway - Sunrise Sunset this ain't...)]
ბინდისფერია სოფელი თანდათან უფრო ბინდდება რა არის ჩვენი სიცოცხლე ჩიტივით გაგვიფრინდება ჩვენს ნასახლარზე ოდესღაც ბალახი აბიბინდება

[Note: the title means "urban" but I have no idea what exact song (songs) were used in a movie. I can hear them but I can't understand a thing so I can't tell how much important this might be. IF YOU'RE GEORGIAN AND YOU KNOW WHAT THE SONG IS ABOUT - I WOULD LOVE YOU TO TELL ME!❤️ - The song is at 1h 28min of this Facebook reel)
23. განდაგანა (Gandagana)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(for the meaning - read Note below)
[Note: this time I don't think it's wise to pay attention to literal translation of Gandagana because this song seems to have much more metaphorical meaning in this particular movie scene than in any other before. That kind of direct "translation" you can find at lyricstranslate.com but these sentences doesn't seem to make much deeper sense for the average outside-Georgia viewer. Better check out these interpretations below (and note that the exact moment the "Tarnanani ninano" can be heard in the movie is right before Merab's "Congratulations"):
1. according to this page: "Gandagana" is a traditional Georgian folk song about love and longing. The lyrics tell the story of two lovers who can't be together due to their families, so they express their emotions through longing and sadness. The chorus repeats the words "Tarnanani ninano" which can be roughly translated to mean "Forever we will be apart." The song reflects the difficulty of love in a time where young lovers were not always able to choose their partners, and the pain and sorrow of having to separate.
2. Overall Meaning - according to this source: The song seems to explore themes of love, longing, and the complexities of relationships. The opening lines, "Gogov gogov kiskisa, Ak chamodi tsklis pirsa, Tskali masvi kokita, Gamadzgeni kocnita," can be loosely translated as "Go, go, dear little one, Like a flame, you ignite my soul, Like a thunderstorm, you strike me." These lines express the intense and passionate nature of the relationship being described. It suggests that the presence of the beloved person has a powerful impact on the singer, evoking feelings of excitement and desire. The following lines, "Tarnanani ninano, Tskals napoti Cmaohkonda," continue the exploration of love and longing. "Tarnanani" is a word that can be interpreted as a yearning or longing, while "napoti" means a missing or longing. So, the phrase could convey a sense of the singer's deep yearning for their loved one. "Cmaohkonda" might refer to a specific place or a metaphorical state representing the separation or distance between the two individuals. The later verses delve into the complexities of the relationship, describing emotional challenges and the struggle to find balance. Lines like "Kibis uku debelio, Me ikedan verçamoval" suggest that there might be a conflict or imbalance in the love affair. The lyrics also touch upon the physical and intimate aspects of the relationship, with phrases like "Baxçaşi rom pipinebdi, Pancridan diginaxeo" depicting a sense of affection and desire. Overall, "Gandagana" captures the intense emotions and complexities that can be experienced in a passionate relationship, expressing longing, desire, and the challenges that come with it.
The lyrics comes from lyricstranslate.com

[Note: 1. This song is even more contrasting to the movie scene than the song during wedding scene - Tsangala song is considered really joyfull and most people are dancing and having fun while our character falls into pieces. Could there be any better way to emphasize how lonely and separated Merab feels in his grief? 2. Lyrics was found at lyricstranslate.com ]

25. წინწყარო (Tsintskaro)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I walked by Tsintskaro, Tsintskaro... I met a beautiful woman there, with koka (a jug / picher) on her shoulder. I spoke a word to her and she got offended, got enraged, stepped aside / ran away! (By other translation: kept standing aloof )
[Note: this song was already heard sooner in the movie (morning after Merab's and Irakli's first night) and described in the Part 2. (Special thanks to @notasapleasure for helping me identify that it's the same song)
This time Davit initiates the song right after returing home from his wedding and Merab quietly starts to sing along. It seems to comfort him somehow. Is only the beloved traditional polyphonic song that is comforting or the memory it brings?
I think that, together with the fact that Merab decided not to throw down the Spirited Away poster (the one that got commented by Irakli) as he did with the rest of the posters on his wall - indicates that he still wants to think about Irakli. I think it might suggest that he wants to keep warm memory about him even after giving back the ear-ring (and I'm mentioning it because I've seen some reviews interpreting the ear-ring scene as "it's over", letting go, Merab deciding that he discovered and accepted his own self and doesn't need Irakli anymore. I think that yes, maybe his approach was to be seen as taugh and proud in the eyes of his leaving lover, but it does not necessarily reflect what he really felt nor how hard giving that ring back was for him). Now all that is left is Spirited Away poster. And Tsintskaro.]

26. რა ლამაზია თუშეთი (Ra Lamazia Tusheti)
Tumblr media
"How beautiful is Tusheti/Georgia"
How beautiful Tusheti and Lasharoba Tushur are, with twisted horns and a forehead with a candle.
There is a curvy son and a woman crouching on the slope, the water of the wild Alazni singing in the Ewes.
Drinking cold beer with the horn of a stall, barbecuing naked on the fire, fingers dancing on the harmonica of a Tush woman.
I close my eyes, I can still see the necks of the horses and the wolf-clad shepherd boys in the horse's harness.
The blue-dressed pines stand like a bride, I love Dartlo and Chigo mountain, I burn them with love.
How good was Tusheti and Lasharoba Tushur, Chedila with twisted horns, forehead with a candle.
Grilled barbecues cooked on ghadar
[Note: 1. The translation is awful because I could only use google-translator. But the general meaning undoubtly is "How beautiful is Georgia". And I think that's another of the series of music contrasting the movie action. The end of the movie rather leaves us with a feeling of "how untollerant" Georgia is, so the song seems a bit ironical. But let's not forget that Merab actually loves his country and its culture, dances and food... so maybe it's not ironical at all? Georgia is beautiful and young people wish they could love their country freely and not have to plan leaving it for their safety 2. Lyrics source is lyricstranlate.com ]

I don't know what to do anymore I don't know what to do anymore I have only one heart How can I divide the two? Muhammad and Abdul too I swear to love Both of them fall in love How will it be? One promised me a scarf for love The other one kills himself for my sake I like you both What can I do, what do you want? Love to both Tell me how to separate you Muhammad and Abdul Don't bother me like that my heart and love I am only changing one One promised me a scarf for love The other one kills himself for my sake
[Note: 1. Kintauri and Kinto's culture is so important in the movie I already made SEPARATE POST ABOUT IT and the whole separate tag: #ATWD kintouri trail . To summarise it: kinto were street fruit sellers in Tbilisi in early 20th century, with characteristic clothes and dance (kintouri) and many of them were gay men (though this fact is many times ommited in georgian sources). The "Kinto's song" was found on old x-ray record and it also tells about gay love. This all brings important context to the fact that Merab and Irakli became dance partners of kintouri duo and were dancing parts of this particular dance throughout the whole movie. 2. Once again the translation comes from google-translator and the lyrics from marketer.ge )

I met you in the garden for the first time, I looked at the moon Your throat was like white wine in a glass I looked at it and couldn't stand those twinkling eyes The twinkling light of your eyes turned into a light
Are you born of your mother or are you a fairy flying from the sky? What pen wrote the eyebrows of your eyes If you ordered me, you know what I would do for you I would move the place where you were born to my house
I would like to know, beautiful, where you are staying In which region does such a good fruit grow? If you ordered me, you know what I would do for you I would move the place where you were born to my house
[Note: 1. As crucial as this song is for the whole And Then We Danced movie I was able not find any good translation of this lyrics that would sound satisfying enough. But I have no doubts that the first verse of this song is directly reffering to Merab and Irakli meeting behind the kvevri in the vineyard!❤️ If not for the fact that the crucial scene is left without music - one might imagine this song to be a perfect background music. Could it be another example of following contrasts in the movie? Love scene between boy and girl might openly refer to a traditional song - but for our boys the song is only secretly suggested in end credits... 2. Source of the lyrics was tsutisopeli.com and archives from alazani.ge ]

Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Tbilisi is a warm road"
[Note: 1. I wish I knew more lyrics than these three words but I can't find it anywhere 2. The song is barely heard in the background of this scene but I think it could be somewhat ironic? Because neither Merabi's boss nor his customers seem to be "warm" persons]

[Note: 1. This lyrics I found only on regarder.ge and it's only a part of it 2. I think the song is a hint about costs of living in Tbilisi - the words "ჩემთან იყო ის მინდა" occur at the very moment when Merab collects the money. And the scene is right after the one when his boss refuses to pay him ahead]

Lomo, you slayer of a lion, you are a bushy chalai, who will dye you red, [x2] shoulder-ring is a shirt
Who made you a gun, the owner of many sheep, he picked your heart, [x2] the branches are poplar trees.
[Note: this Google Translation is probably the crappiest of all... But I think the song refers to the fact that Merab, unlike his brother, took responsibility for his family (like "owner of the sheep"?) and went on a quest to get some money. I think Merab already knew that meeting his father won't make him feel good - so this action was just as brave for him as "slaying a lion"]
ლომო, შე ლომის მოკლულო, ბუსნი ჭალაის პირსაო, ვინ შეგიღება წითლადა, [x2] მხარ-ბეჭი პერანგისაო.

[Note: The singer is asking his instrument to aid him in singing a song to woe a girl (source). It corresponds with what is happening on the screen: the rising sun and... the sun-faced beauty]

Move your hand up and down, as if it were a chianure  (popular musical instrument), Don't touch your neighbour's wife, she's your family member too,
So give a space, give him a space, space boy, space, Oh girls, how I love the way you walk,
Clap your hands little boy George, [x2] don't let go this girl, Watch him carefully, he's selling a dress,
(Note: 1. They surely clap a lot don't they 2. Surprisingly this translation looks the least crappy of all and it comes from lyricstranslate.com . And even though the only part of the lyrics that I caught in the movie I put below - I suppose most Georgians know the whole song just by hearing a snippet, so maybe it's worth knowing it too to better understand this movie scene: HERE's the whole lyrics of one version of the song with full translation and HERE's a slightly different version with translation)
ჩამოდექით, განი, განი, ტაში ბიჭო, ტაშიო, გოგოვ შენ კი გენაცვალე გავლა-გამოვლაშიო,

And Then We Danced / და ჩვენ ვიცეკვეთ (2019), dir. Levan Akin
#ATWD amateur guidebook
Soundtrack & Lyrics: Part 2 [go to: Prologue, Part 1, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5]
[Note: Most of this film music corresponds with what's happening on the screen. The less characters are speaking - the more traditional folk tunes take their turn in commenting the events. Old songs are fitting so good that the story becomes universal "tale as old as time". Lyrics translation usually comes from Google Translator and is absolutely awful but I don't speak Georgian so what else could I do]
6. კუდრაჭა მარო (Kudratcha Maro)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[Title-Note: according to this source "Kudratcha" means "chess" but also is "a slang word for naughty, devilish girls". And "Maro" is probably a name. So maybe the title means something like: "Maro, a coquette" ?]
At first she pretends to be indifferent and the day after she pretends as if she never knew him she flirts with the eyes. Are you the month april? who does not know what he wants? Where do you want (to go)? (But) we are going together (on a date) I want to destroy you!
[Note: 1. As there is no "he" or "she" in georgian language but only ის - maybe Irakli is flirting with Merab ostentatiously in the broad daylight? 2. this translation thanks to @chrisoels and her german subtitles and I already wrote more abt it HERE]; 3. This is the only song that was actually written for this movie - HERE's why]
youtube
7. Take a chance on me - ABBA
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We can go dancing We can go walking As long as we’re together Listen to some music Maybe just talking Get to know you better ’Cause you know I’ve got So much that I wanna do When I dream I’m alone with you It’s magic You want me to leave it there Afraid of a love affair But I think you know That I can’t let go
If you change your mind I’m the first in line Honey I’m still free Take a chance on me
[Note: 1. music by ABBA is very popular in Georgia. 2. normally having song by ABBA in the movie would cost much more than the whole movie itself but son of Benny Andersson worked with Levan Akin and Benny himself also liked the movie and accepted the use of their song in the soundtrack (I can't find the source of this information right now)]
youtube
X. [Tamada speech, no music]
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[Voices in the background] God bless you! (Please in poetic form) [voices when Irakli is getting up and then leaves] Love cannot wait, it rises and goes away
[Note: this translation I have thanks to @chrisoels and her german subtitles, I already wrote more abt it HERE]
8. წინწყარო (Tsintskaro)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I walked by Tsintskaro, Tsintskaro... I met a beautiful woman there, with koka (a jug / picher) on her shoulder. I spoke a word to her and she got offended, got enraged, stepped aside / ran away! (By other translation: kept standing aloof)
[Note: 1. The lyrics corresponds with the last scene: the meeting in the countryside, the jug (kvevri (ქვევრი) in the movie, koka (კოკა) in the song) and the running away; 2. According to wikipedia: Tsintskaro is a Georgian folk song from the Kakhetian region, its title is the name of a village in the Kartli region, which translates as "at the spring water" and it is usually performed by a male vocalist and choir (poliphonic singing). This song can also be heard in 1985 Kate Bush song Hello Earth; 3. This translation comes from lyricstranslate.com ]
წინწყარო ჩამოვიარე, წინყარო... წინ შემხვდა ქალი ლამაზი, კოკა რომ ედგა მხარზედა. სიტყვა უთხარ და იწყინა, განრისხდა, დადგა განზედა
youtube
XX. [Boy Playing Doli (drum)]
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[Note: there are no words here but THE DANCE speaks for itself - I already described HERE how I think Irakli send dancing-message to Merab after he finally digested the last night's events and decided to go with the flow]
9. Honey - Robyn
Tumblr media Tumblr media
No, you're not gonna get what you need But baby, I have what you want Come get your honey No, you're not gonna get what you need But baby, I have what you want Come get your honey I got your honey, baby
Every colour and every taste Every breath that whispers your name It's like emeralds on the pavement Every colour and every taste Every breath that whispers your name It's like emeralds on the pavement (I got your honey, baby)
At the heart of some kind of flower Stuck in glitter, strands of saliva Won't you get me right where the hurt is? At the heart of some kind of flower Stuck in glitter, strands of saliva Won't you get me right where the hurt is?
And the waves come in and they're golden But down in the deep the honey is sweeter (Ooh, it is sweeter, baby)
[Note: 1. Choosing this exact song in the movie was said to be more or less a matter of accident (see HERE) but you know what they say: "there are no accidents"; 2. This scene VERY much corresponds with the one that was earlier in the movie - HERE is the hint]

And Then We Danced / და ჩვენ ვიცეკვეთ (2019), dir. Levan Akin
#ATWD amateur guidebook
Soundtrack & Lyrics - Prologue [go to: Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5]
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Note:
Here's the old man's speech. There's no music in the background right now (kind of distinctive that it's been roughly interrupted?) but I still think it's a key moment to understand how important the music is in this movie:
The old man is so sure of himself when lecturing the boy of what ქართული ცეკვა (georgian dance) really means.
What he doesn't know though is that this young dancer before his eyes already is someone who impersonates "the spirit of our nation" the best.
We can be sure that Merab truly loves traditional dance of his nation, as well as the rest of the georgian culture he grown up with. Whenever he dances he can't hide how much he enjoys it. Every free hour he spends watching old historical films with traditional georgian dance.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
While other guys spend the night in town, he'd rather be practicing in his room in the middle of the night or in the studio early in the morning. Even above his own bed - there are no posters with football-players you might expect of a boy at his age - but only dancers of traditional georgian dance. Merab is simply a young passionate guy totally devoted to the culture and tradition of his ancesors. Just look how his eyes glow when he can try on this festive chokha!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But all in all he is just a quiet, sensible boy. And so whenever his emotions rise that he can't otherwise express - we can hear the music, as if it was his heart singing! Sometimes it sings with old folk tunes, sometimes with modern georgian music. Sometimes with popular music which is not georgian at all... and yet Merab manages to always make it a little more georgian: either by dancing kintouri moves to ABBA or wearing papakha to Robyn's song.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
That's how you continue ancient tradition with youthful vigour. A perfectly mixed up cultural cocktail with no false taste - exactly what "a spirit of our nation" should be.
And yet this potential is wasted. All the voices telling him he's not good enough (his dad) or not tough enough (his teacher) he can still endure. But only until the moment when social expectations of his beloved "traditional" culture take away his love - and break his heart...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He will not be this nation's spirit anymore
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Because "there is no future" for him in Georgia

"Little boy"
I lost a little boy In a red shirt I lost a little boy In a red shirt Either going up or going down Haven't you really seen him?
Haven't you seen him?
I lost a little boy In a red shirt I lost a little boy In a red shirt Either going up or going down Haven't you really seen him? Either going up or going down Haven't you really seen him? Couldn't you see the black eyes in the white boxes? Couldn't you see the black eyes in the white boxes? Don't say goodbye like that. Don't say goodbye like that.
(Source + google translate from russian + google translate from georgian)
[Note: 1. Mary is either not sure what's going on or she still can't believe it's true - but she does feel that she's losing Merab 2. According to this translation the song is about a young person who has been left behind by someone they love, and they feel abandoned and unimportant. The repetition of the line "Patara bichi damekarga tsitelp'eranga" conveys a sense of loss and rejection. The use of the color red, "tsitel'peranga," typically associated with passion or anger, emphasizes the intensity of the emotions the person feels.]

11. Days of Dust - Molly Nilsson
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If it’s over now, maybe now i’m finally free If it’s over now, maybe now it’s letting me be
Marie Curie don’t believe in text book tragedy I stepped on the lawn of some forbidden dawn And declared myself so free
In the days of dust, I’m falling Just like it’s all over now Days of dust, night calling Just like it’s all over now
Nothings what I’d expect to be If I just wasted time At least while I had it Was mine
If it’s over now If it’s over now
You know the moment when you walk out the door: If you turn around (turn around!) And your prison ain’t there anymore
It felt like 20 years ago today But still I can’’t forget I packed all my things and I went away Lighter than a cigarette
In the days of dust In the days of dust
...and like I had just been saved From a burning building of desire I got back up and I ran right into the fire
In the days of dust, it’s over now In the days of dust, it’s over now
If it’s over now Then maybe it was meant to be Then maybe it was meant to be
[Note: 1. It seems like Merab is happy to think his whole life will never be the same again. It's as if the world he lived in so far has ended (after all his love is seen as "end of civilisation" according to church and conservatives) - but he himself is in peace with that. He's not afraid, he's feeling rebelious, feeling light and free at last. Excited and ready for whatever is going to happen 2. source of the lyrics is here]

It will rain, I will get wet delia ranuni It will rain, I will get wet delia ranuni
[Note: 1. I think Merab feels that he's losing something dear and precious just as if a beautiful butterfly was flying away from him 2. I spend a lot of time trying to find out what or who "Delia Ranuni" is until I came to the conclusion it's probably Georgian version of "tra-la-la" (you can correct me if I'm wrong)]

Is it just me or could there be more gay-movies with boys than with girls? 🤔 I realised that I already watched few movies with boys/men love but never actually watched a good movie with girls love (at least nothing I would remember * ).
My choice was: Friend / Rafiki (2018, dir. Wanuri Kahiu)
Tumblr media
First of all I have to warn you that I am going to compare that movie to And Then We Danced / და ჩვენ ვიცეკვეთ (2019, dir. Levan Akin) - mainly because I love it so much that for me it's like a model-of-a-meter-from-Sevres in gay cinema😉 But also because that one movie was in fact a key reason why I chose another...
...because ATWD and Rafiki are alike in many aspects: main characters are very young adults (about 20 - and those girls just finished school so I guess they are even younger than boys in ATWD), still living with their parents (divorced parents even), in a rather poor country with huge homophobia (not as severe as in islamic countries but still). Okey, I'm not sure if people in Kenya are as poor society as the one in Georgia but those old blocks of flats seemed oddly familiar
...and Kena wears a hoodie!😆 with short sleeves but still😋 (ATWD fans will understand😉)
Now about the aesthetics (least important, I know, but I am visual artist and I can't just ignore it): all those vibrant colours and patterns in every scene are mesmerising!!!🤩
Yet I feel like the movie kind of lacks a music... I mean there sure is some music in the background but it did not left any memory in my mind after end credits. Maybe it's just my fault, maybe it was not "my kind" of music so my brain not paying enough attention? I mean I remember they were dancing with those colourful lights so there must have been some music, why do I not remember that music at all? Well, okey, I get it's not And Then We Danced with it's soundtrack (and dances) leaving me enchanted and wanting more **, bringing back all the movie emotions every time I hear it and provoking me to dig for hidden message in the lyrics and dance moves many months after first watching... (yes people, And Then We Danced is a masterpeace that does it all!). But at least I'd love to have that one song that would stuck in my head, that I could add to my playlist as a movie reminder... There was no such thing in Rafiki or I did not notice
Tumblr media
I loved that relationship!!!😍 I can confess now, that I was a bit afraid of what I may see and how my brain would react to that (don't get me wrong here - no matter if it's LGBT or cis-het movie I just simply don't like to see any shocking scenes! And my fear of seeing such thing has been rooted in a fact that polish and generally european "ambitious" movies seem to assume that without drug taking, doing something disgusting, raping or braking the law the movie is "not ambitious enough"🤦). But the way it was shown was very subtle, gradual and felt so natural, simply organic thus very convincing to me. It also reminded me of And Then We Danced. It's when I see them together (Kena with Ziki or Merab with Irakli) I have that feeling of warmth and comfort... I don't have any awkward revelation of "seeing gays/lesbians"... It feels as if none of them were any longer woman or man to me - I can only see two people in love... And any words to name what is between them are needless or utterly wrong and vulgar.
It's worth to mention that both characters are really "good girls": with good grades, going to study and their greatest rebellion act is staying out at night - those girls are definitely someone easy to relate to.
Girls in Rafiki talks about their relationship quite a lot while boys in ATWD do not at all (they mostly communicate with dance - but OMG what dance it is...). I guess girls are generally more likely to talk about feelings. Georgian guys might not even have words to describe what they were experiencing
And there's even religion issue. Nuff said...
Tumblr media
Now for the sad part: --------------[SPOILERS AHEAD!]------------ I was naive enough to think two girls are more safe from violence than two boys would be... Yes, there is violence.
...and thinking of which parent would be more supporting, compassionate or at least the less judging you? Like I would expect that when you're living with your mom and women are meant to be more compassionate from definition, and you do not even want to talk to your dad who left you both for another woman... and when the hour of trial comes - you are just heartlessly rejected by that "closer" parent with no respect to the fact you were almost killed, I mean... People are like this FOR REAL?! I can't believe it, I don't want to believe it, yet I guess people are just fucked up more than I thought they were and that's just how they work... Maybe it's even a cliche LGBT movie trope, I have no idea...
And then there's the part that I'm crying my eyes out and if it was not enough it is followed by that another scene (as if the movie makers saying: "hold on a second don't put your box of tissues yet!") - when that guy sits... Just sits near. It may not seem like any start for the community, I mean it's not that they ever even talk - they don't even look at each other. Yet they are... together. Just silently together in this. (And I suddently wish I knew that background boy character better and I want to hear his story so so much...)
I wonder about the woman in the end telling Kena not to touch her... yet as the very next thing she throws that certain information for her. Why? While watching I thought it was just another provocation from that gossiping bitch but after the film I thought maybe that was some kind of poor trial of making amend? She was definitelly a bitch and she still kind of despised Kena even now - yet I suppose all she ever wished for Kena was humuliation and not the actual severe death-threatening violence that occured - and for that she might wanted to make amend by giving the information (most probably not realising that Kena already knew)
The end is not straightforward happy but it is promising so I am satisfied ❤
__________
* Ok, there is one girl couple in Wet Sand / სველი ქვიშა (2021, dir. Elene Naveriani) but that relationship is not it's main topic and also it is more complicated than just "lesbian couple" as one person is suggested to be trans or maybe nonbinary ("born in wrong body") and the other seemed demisexual to me (if not asexual even).
** It is actually the very moment I hear the accordion of Ra Lamazia Tusheti in the beggining of End Credits of And Then We Danced and then the title appears, and... I just know I have to watch it again right this instant, and hell I know it's 2 a.m. already, and it will be another 2 hours, but who the heck would need to sleep at all when you can just rewatch your favorite movie over and over again?! So I found myself sleepless drug addict to the movie because of its soundtrack - why, thank you Levan Akin, that's exactly what I needed in my life...

And Then We Danced / და ჩვენ ვიცეკვეთ (2019), dir. Levan Akin - here's my new favorite most-relatable review:
...and my other favorite most-relatable review so far was this:
Just look:
The whole story is accompanied by Georgian poems and toasts, which must be listened to carefully even when they are deaf, as if heard outside the action. That's because no word in the film sounds meaningless - every voice counts here.
and also:
So I watched.
And then again. And again. And I was constantly discovering something new (for example, the meaning of the scene where Merab returns Irakli's earring didn't come to me until the third time). I asked a half-Georgian friend to tell me what the songs are about (none are just ornaments).
I already know that "every voice counts"!!! I know so painfully well that "none of the song is just an ornament!!! So why is it so hard to solve the puzzle and one must struggle so much to get a single lyrics?!😭
Geez it is frustrating... But also very rewarding. Kind of a challenge. And I still sooo much want to go to Tbilisi🫠

Hey, other And Then We Danced (2019) fans, listen, have you already known that the song in the background of this movie scene...
...was initially different than the one we know from the final version of the film?🤯
[Video comes from this post of @andthenwedanced on Instagram (dated: 29 August 2019)]
What you hear in the fragment above is Tu Ase Turfa Ikavi (თუ ასე ტურფა იყავი) - and not Khma Amoige Panduro ! (which I already described to you in Part 1 of my "ATWD soundtrack & lyrics" series)
If you were so fine / Tu Ase Turfa Ikavi
If you were so fine, Why didn't I mention you, violet? Because, for love, I hadn't my heart open ( x2)
Now I met another gardener, Who swayed me with petting, Sang to me sweet voice, And swayed me on hem ( x2)
If you were so fine, Why didn't I mention you, violet? Because, for love, I hadn't my heart open ( x2)
[translation given by YouTube user @merabbarbakadze in comments under Hamlet's Gonashvili version of the song]
Alternative translation:
If you were so beautiful, why didn't I notice you before, violet? Because I didn't have my heart opened for love.
Now I met another gardener filled me with tenderness sweetly blazed with me began to swing me on hem of a skirt
if you were so beautiful Why hadn't I noticed you before, violet? Just because my heart was yet not opened for the love.
[translation above was given by YouTube user @leokac in comment under this Ketie's Melua version of the song]

Now you can compare it with the song that was used in the final version of ATWD:
ხმა ამაიღე ფანდურო [Khma amoige panduro]
Raise your voice, panduri For the rising sun I wish to speak a shairi, For a sun-faced beauty, Sun-faced, sun-faced, for the sun-faced beauty
ხმა ამაიღე ფანდურო ამომავალი მზისთვინა შაირ მწადიან წარმოვთქო პირიმზე ლამაზისთვინა მის: პირიმზე პირიმზე პირიმზე ლამაზისთვინა

Now I am not sure what was the actual reason that one song won over another. Maybe And The We Danced movie makers simply had no permission to use "Tu Ase Turfa..."? (It happened before - many singers wanted not to be associated with movie about "perverts", that's why most of ATWD songs were recorded particulary for the movie and the song sang in the car had to be literally written for the car scene alone (!!!) - you can read more about it my "And Then We Danced: Soundtrack & Lyrics" series or under my "ATWD amateur guidebook" tag). Or maybe it was decided to not fit to the moment in the film as perfectly as "Khma amoige..."?
[⬆️The above is from FINAL version!⬆️]
I got to say I loved "Tu ase turfa" since the first time I heard it (and it was on ATWD OST playlist even! Though I thought it was a mistake for that song was nowhere in the final movie so I thought that maybe somebody was mistaken... Yes I was so stupid to think someone could mistake two totally different songs, lol😅). But I love "Khma amoige..." so much in this scene, it sounds so quite and delicate, almost like a lullaby... or maybe like a first shy thought of noticing somebody's beauty for the first time? - and it fits so perfectly with Merab's bashfull little laugh in marshrutka when Irakli's sleeping on his shoulder🫠 While "Tu ase turfa" would sound more... solemn? And serious? (especially the part with choir). Ican imagine it would feel more as if Merab was already deeply in love in that moment... Though the lyrics does emphasize the fact of not noticing beauty before being ready for love so theoretically it does fit to that movie scene... So I don't know, just my thoughts😅
But I love both songs, I love all of them!❤️❤️❤️
